title Designer’s Dilemma – The Precision of Numerical Simulations in Design Systems

summary Performance based design systems are characterised through the use of performance related evaluation methods or by providing design environments which are restricting the design space according to performance criteria. The performance of a design can be evaluated by numerical simulations. With the use of numerical simulations a fundamental dilemma appears: the precision implied in numerical simulations and the imprecision of the design process itself are systematic contradictions. User control or user interaction in open systems places the user into charge of the imprecision required by the design process. In closed systems, as the below described evolutionary system, methods of imprecision have to be integrated i.e. into the precise simulation based evaluation procedure. Through tolerant selection methods and the gradual evaluation of individuals the rigid and precise system can be guided towards a design system rather than an optimisation system. Due to technical requirements which are related both to the fact of using computer systems but also to the systematic conditions implied to simulations the use of the tolerant selection methods is limited.

summary This proposal of micro architecture is a continuation of a project began on 2012. Consist in a urban sustainable and transformable bus stop, with inmotic technology that allows illumination controls, security cameras, information of bus schedules, to charge bus cards and climate control. The team work is interdisciplinary and it is composed by designers, sustainable and inmotics specialist. They all verified the proposal's structure, sustainability and micro electricity.  It is inclusive, attends the needs of all kind of users and answers to the socio-economic features of the milieu.

summary Architecture, nowadays, is an even more demanding activity in which complexity is the keyword: complex forms, complex functions and complex structures require sophisticated facilities and components, for example, ‘The Cloud’ of D. and M. Fuksas in Rome. These complexities can give rise to numerous risks, among which fire is frequently a central problem. The fire safety norms do not involve an approach integrated with other instruments or building model (BIM), but provide a list of information and constraints. These codes are now shifting away from a prescriptive-based towards a performance-based method due to recent progress in fire safety engineering. Following this approach, a case study simulation of a multi-purpose centre was carried out in Tivoli, near Rome. This simulation allowed greater freedom in architectural composition, a lower risk to people, a larger number of material and building components used and higher safety standards to be achieved. The model is based on the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) language, a simulation code for low-speed flows, focused on smoke, particle and heat transport by fire.

summary Public transport interchanges often involve several stakeholders for planning and decision-making. As a result complexity leads to inefficient processes, leading to indecision, disruption, or costly delays. Consequently, the paper focuses on the application of tools for navigation and prioritization of opportunities in the need finding, fuzzy-front end, or mystery phase as introduced by Martin (2009). The paper outlines in a case study how a multi-stakeholder platform can progress from complete ambiguity in project definition through to clearly defined and understood projects that have a shared intent across the multi-stakeholder platform. These tools have been applied in a public transport context, by demonstrating the process of integrating digital innovation into various stakeholders through a participatory research process. The paper introduces the research background; discusses the hypothesis; outlines the case study; emphasizes its significance for multi-stakeholder decision-making and discusses the opportunities for the built environment.

summary Daylight is a crucial element for indoor environment quality. Office buildings commonly use fully glazed façades to reflect a luxurious appearance and to maximize natural light at the expenses of high energy consumption due to cooling/heating. Double-skin façades are one of the solutions that improve the building efficiency while maintaining good natural lighting. This paper studies the impact of various perforated outer skins for non-sealed double-skin facades on light quality in prototypical office space in Egypt using parametric design. A traditional solution for light such as the Mashrabiya is taken as an inspiration for this study to generate different forms of perforated screens. The cases were analysed using light simulation tool and sorted by a genetic algorithm to show best 30 solutions offered by the design criteria. A methodology to achieve these objectives was suggested in this paper to reach better light quality in indoor spaces.

summary The relationship between the material settings and situational belonging to a more general notion of the culture of a given community remains the subject of inquiry of at least two scientific disciplines: anthropology and urban morphology studies. In this study an assessment of the various modelling platforms is performed with the objective of finding the most efficient method which allows the description of the semiotic features of urbanscapes. The ideal system should link the parametric definition of urban geometry with the high flexibility of data input and easy manipulation. In order to enable culture related analyses of urbanscapes, analyses should be performed which refers to the semiotics of morphological structures in the detailed scale of urban enclosure, which are streets or squares. Some elements of the proposed method of index key analyses are explained as one possible solution for the problems posed.

summary This paper deals with the generative and evolutionary aspects of parametric design. We aim to provide a better understanding of individual design strategies to support creativity in parametric design via protocol analysis. An in-depth analysis conceptualises subjects’ creative strategies into two models: problem-driven strategy and solution-driven strategy. The solution-driven strategy progress design in the solution space resulted in the highest value in the level of creativity. This is one of potential aspects of parametric design. Exploring design strategies in parametric design contributes to its effective use.

summary In the context of the growing usefulness of computation within architecture, structures face the potential for being conceived of as intelligent entities capable of resilient, adaptive behavior.Building on this idea, this work explores the use of machine learning for structures that may learn to autonomously “stand up”. The hypothesis is that a neural network with genetically optimized weights would be capable of teaching lightweight, flexible, and unanchored structures to self-rectify after falling, through their interactions with their environment. The experiment devises a physical and a simulated prototype. The machine-learning algorithm is implemented on the virtual model in a three-dimensional physics environment, and a solution emerges after a number of tests. The learned behavior is transferred to the physical prototype to test its performance in reality. This method succeeds in allowing the physical prototype to stand up. The findings of this process may have useful implications for developing embodied dynamic structures that are enabled with adaptive behavior.

summary The paper presents a novel approach on the design of complex forms by re-formulating the relationships between form, structure, material, fabrication and construction. It is proposed that current design models are supplemented by feedback-enabled frameworks, integrating material properties, fabrication constraints and construction logistics. As such, a series of input parameters based on industry standards, filtered through physical testing and digital simulations, feed a central computational model. The outcome is weighed against a set of objectives towards an optimum design solution which embodies construction logic while ultimately opposing costly inflated ad-hoc solutions. Within the above framework and as part of a broader research conducted at [ARC], this paper illustrates a design methodology implemented at the case study of 'God's Eye', winning entry of Sukkahville 2013 International Design Competition. It is further supported that a high tech, interdisciplinary design process based on efficient material assemblies allows for a complex, yet efficient end result, through low tech affordable construction.

summary Evolution and innovation in architecture are intensely related to the rise and developments of technology. Within this context, it is possible to recognize how in recent decades this milieu has fostered the development of new methodologies for urban design and architectural practice, as is, for example, the Parameterization. This paper is focused on the subject of Parametric Urbanism: discussing / questioning the emergence of this new architectural methodology; addressing the factors that contributed to its appearance; and seeking to understand whether the parametric approach has benefits and whether it may or may not be a solution or of assistance to urban planning. The paper provides a brief literature review focused on parametric urbanism and then it presents a practical case study of parametric urbanism: an Urban Plan in Beijing, developed in an academic context, at the University École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2012. Having as base diverse examples of parametric urbanism, it is tried to identify/justify decisions defining principles and application guidance for this project. The conclusion presents the final considerations based on opposing the case study with the theoretical approach, seeking to clarify whether this new kind of urban design methodology, Parametric Urbanism, is or not viable.

summary The demand for sustainable buildings with minimal environmental impact and efficient energy use is increasing. The most effective design decisions for sustainable design can be made in the early design phases, but appropriate tools to explore design alternatives and understand their impacts on building energy performance are not available at this stage of the project. The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and parametric modeling is the new trend of building modeling, which can greatly benefit sustainable building design. This research introduces an innovative tool to facilitate integrated parametric BIM and to enhance its applications towards creative, sustainable building design through simulation and optimization. The created tool, Revit2GBSOpt, integrates parametric BIM and building energy performance simulation and enables designers to generate alternative options in BIM to explore the energy performance simulation results automatically. Finding the optimized solution, the BIM model will be updated.

summary This paper addresses the acoustic performance of complex curved surface geometries that are commonly known to pose problems of sound concentration, thus affecting speech intelligibility and audience experience in spaces of temporal arts performance. It reviews an open system of design research in which parametric design process, structural analysis and acoustic analysis are deployed to improve the sound of ellipsoidal structures in relation to sound source and audience positions, by adapting the height, dimension and centre point of a dome structure, consequently improving the acoustic behaviour of the performance space. The paper discusses an iterative design, analysis and optimization processes, in which a number of generative form variations were developed in Grasshopper, and reworked in McNeel Rhino, tested in engineering software (Strand7), and evaluated in acoustic simulation (ODEON). This allowed an interdisciplinary team to develop, test and evolve a design proposal that shows one solution for avoiding sound concentration and consequently improving acoustic performance in complex intersecting and curved geometries of a multifunctional building.

summary The conception of a Generative Model (GM) is an important step when applying optimization methods in architectural design. The variant spectrum generable with a GM determines if an optimal solution for the different demands placed on a design can be found. Using the example of optimizing façades (more specifically window-layouts), it is shown that GM that exclusively vary either metric or topological properties of the geometry are not sufficient, because they only cover a highly restricted solution-space. To keep the solution space as large as possible, it is argued, that it is necessary to vary both topological and metric properties. The combination of both properties is called topo-metric properties. A GM for the generation of facade variants is presented, that is able to systematically vary these topo-metric properties. The effectiveness of the developed GM compared to conventional GMs is demonstrated using a simple test scenario.

summary This paper describes work conducted as part of an interdisciplinary research project into new approaches to using computer technology in the early phases of the architectural design process. The aim is to reduce the existing discrepancy between familiar, analogue ways of working in the early design stages and the increasingly widespread use of digital tools in office practice. Taking this as its starting point, a prototype for a design platform was developed. The core of the project is a direct, real-time connection between real volumetric models, an interactive 3D sketching-tool and interactive digital content that supports the design process. The conceptual and technical core of this connection is an integrated object recognition system. In this paper we describe the need for an integrated solution, the underlying conceptual idea and the recognition methods implemented including their respective strengths and limitations.

summary A rigid spatial structure represents a three-dimensional structural system in which the size of the singular planar elements is very small related to the whole construction. In this paper we will do investigations of quadrilateral patterns and we will propose an analytical method for designing structural rigid folding with quadrilateral patterns following geometrical surfaces of different topology. Our method offers folding structures with four fold lines meeting in one node which allows a simpler solution of join connections and assembling of the whole spatial and structural system. As the physical characteristics of paper can lead to all kinds of wrong conclusions it is necessary to use CAD tools in addition to scale models, where the entire folding element is reconstructed and its geometric characteristics are controlled. This kind of control reflects on the scale model. Models are then adjusted, examined and built to reach certain conclusions that are once more tested in CAD software.

summary In this paper, alternative approaches to structure the parametric geometry in relation to information on various performances are described and exemplified. They relate to different levels of knowledge that concern the performances considered in the process and which are available to the designer while the parametric model is being set. A theoretic framework embeds the different approaches, for which the use of parametric modelling is structured in three phases: strategy-definition; model-building; and solution-assessment. The phases and their interrelations are discussed. Finally, four case studies are presented, focusing on the relation between the knowledge available in strategy-definition and the exploration occurring in solution-assessment.

summary This work has its goal in clarifying hypothesis in using search computational power in the form of genetic algo-rithms to find geometric solutions while designing architecture. We will start by roughly explaining the fundamen-tals of this type of algorithms and its mechanics and ensue by exploring some uses of this technology in architecture. A clear separation between the traditional self-builder and the architect as a profession, in their ways of designing, cannot be denied. Christopher Alexander has a clear view on the mechanics behind these processes, in which repeti-tion over time drives perfection and self-awareness in error detection. Some years before Alexander, computation brought technological possibilities of brute force solution finding, only to be “evolved” into evolutionary strategies – as predicted by Turing. Bringing biology and genetics concepts into the fields of computation, Holland creates ge-netic algorithms, a simulation of the laws of Mendel and Darwin applied to solutions finding. Architecture design, in its pursuit of finding good project solutions, started using these computing strategies recently. Over the last years, the complexity of design levels in which these algorithms have been applied has increased steadily, giving us a glimpse of the future of computing architecture.
