summary The project Knitectonics aims at exploring digital fabrication systems that facilitate optimized, adaptive and specific integrated architectural solutions (Male-Alemany 2010). It is inspired by the beauty of nature systems with their inherent efficiency and performance. The research explored on-site fabrication of monocoques shells, integrating skin and structure along with services and infrastructure, using a simple household technique. It thus embodies a self organized micro system of textures and a macro system of structures. This paper elaborates how the numeric aspects of a textile technique were used, first to digitally imitate the process of assembly and further exploited to develop and visualize a novel fabrication system, based on material research and technical experimentation.

title Parametric Documenting of Built Heritage: 3D Virtual Reconstruction of Architectural Details

summary This paper examines 3D modelling of architectural elements with the help of parametric components. Such components may be useful within the framework of projects dealing with virtual 3D reconstruction of heritage monuments. Architectural components of the built heritage often have complex geometry. We studied the various geometrical shapes of a given architectural element, representative of a specific period and place. This study allowed us to identify the parameters and to implement parametric objects (in Maya Environment [1]). We also developed a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to answer the user's needs while generating the 3D model representing the architectural element. Within this GUI, the user is able to make adjustments with the help of laser point clouds from laserscanning, 2D plans or photographs. We exemplify our method with a case study dealing with openings and lintels. The corpus under study consists of elements of the built heritage of Montreal (Canada) and Nancy (France).

summary This paper is a presentation of the preliminary framework for the design and fabrication of the soft-skin. Today, the digital technology applied in the architecture field is everywhere. However, there are still lots of fantastic free form architecture uncompleted and remained on the paper architecture or only the digital visual simulated model. Until now, most of the finished free form cases are consisted of the skin and bones, or only the bones. The complete soft-skin cases without the bones are fewer and the process remains untold. Based on the parametric environments and biology, how might you design a free form without the bones? How could you make the soft skin stand up? The research starts a series of exploration of the design and fabrication for the soft skin, and seeks to propose the preliminary framework as a helpful reference for the designers who deal with the soft skin project.

title CONTESTED BOUNDARIES: Digital Fabrication + Hand Craft

summary This research investigates the relationship between efficiency, precision and tactile variation within architectural design and fabrication. A digitally driven design may be seamlessly precise and consistent but also feel sterile and distant from the human body. A materially driven design may be intimate and tactile but lack the accuracy needed to connect elements. Digital fabrication techniques are combined with hand craft material manipulations in search of a unique hybrid tectonic that merges connection accuracies with subtle but sensual divergences between repeating modules. Prototypes have been constructed at the object and inhabitable scale.

summary A new housing complex on the Campus of the University of Patras, Greece, is expected to serve as a test-bed for experimentation with a parametric design process that integrates significant climatic data. To optimize the environmental performance of the proposed housing complex a parametric design algorithm has been developed. The algorithm links the weather data in the area with the site topography and the basic geometric features of the buildings on the site. To explore the interaction of the building features with the prevailing winds in the area and the solar exposure throughout the year various software applications, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, have been utilized. The inclusion of wind data in the algorithm renders it particularly effective. The developed parametric process has been useful during the early design phase when studies on various patterns for arranging the buildings on the site were conducted. The parametric process has facilitated the configuration of the typical building block as well.

summary When working with parametric models, architects typically focus on using rather structuring them (Woodbury, 2010). As a result, increasing design complexity typically means a convoluted parametric model, amplifying known problems: 'hard to understand, modify, share and reuse' (Smith 2007; Davis 2011). This practice is in contrast with conventional software-programming where programmers are known to meticulously document and structure their code with versioning tool. In this paper, we argue that versioning tools could help to manage parametric modelling complexity, as it has been showing with software counterparts. Four key features of version control: committing, differentiating, branching, and merging, and how they could be implemented in a parametric design practice are discussed. Initial user test sessions with 5 student designers using GHShot Grasshopper version control plugin (Cristie and Joyce 2018, 2017) revealed that the plugin is useful to record and overview design progression, share model, and provide a fallback mechanism.

The study material is based on queuing theory, and will explore a waiting line M/M/1 and infinite population characteristics, which are then transformed to a type M/M/S with infinite population to keep the system charged and to analyze the behavior of management indicators in each case.

title Local Code: The Critical Use of Geographic Information Systems in Parametric Urban Design

summary Local Code uses geospatial analysis to identify thousands of publicly owned abandoned sites in major US cities, imagining this distributed, vacant landscape as a new urban system. Deploying GIS analysis in conjunction with parametric design software, a landscape proposal for each site is tailored to local conditions, optimizing thermal and hydrological performance to enhance local performance and enhance the whole city’s ecology. Relieving burdens on existing infrastructure, such a digitally mediated, dispersed system provides important opportunities for urban resilience and transformation. In a case study of San Francisco, the projects’ quantifiable effects on energy usage and stormwater remediation would eradicate 88-96% of the need for more expensive, centralized, sewer, and electrical upgrades. As a final, essential layer, the project proposes digital citizen participation to conceive a new, more public infrastructure as well.

summary In this article we discuss the use of photographic panoramas in the capture of urban space and architecture. The picture is a dynamic and interactive model, which has been used as a tool that assists the apprehension of space, due to its high level of realism. When associated with the virtual tour, this tool is potentialized due to the amount of information that can be added to the application. To illustrate this analysis, two examples were offered at different scales: one aimed at the capture of urban spaces and the second aimed at architectural spaces. In doing so it was possible to compare results and discuss the potential of the tool.

summary This paper aims to discuss alternative and innovative plan models for Chinese cities that are currently under rapid development. Our study considers Complexity Theories of Cities as theoretical base and applies a holistic approach in city planning by recognizing the complex nature of city. We strive to integrate the diverse local structure in social and spatial aspects with the ambition and demands of city’s expansion. Digital sequence simulation is used as an innovative tool to represent local activities, promote interventions and predict possible self-organization process in the future. The study arrives at an open scenario the feasible prospect. A conclusion is drawn to reflect the process, achievement and weakness of the research.

title Surface Symmetries: The Smith House Revisited

summary This work proposes the use of partial order lattices along with representational schemes to account for patterns of ambiguity and emergence in the description of designs. The complexity of such designs is viewed as an aggregation of spatial layers that can all be decomposed by the subgroup relations of the symmetry of the configuration. At the end, this methodology points to a combinatorial approach that generates visual prototypes for future use in design synthesis. Here, Meier's work is just a case study that validates the group theoretical approach.

summary Algorithm Aided Architectural Design (AAAD) is considered a second paradigm shift in the Architectural design process after the first one of bridging the conventional design process to the digital realm of design. This paper is divided into two parts, the first part comprehends the Algorithmic Architecture approach of from the point of view of tools, techniques, theories and practice in order to find the Algotecture theories on the map of Digital Architecture. Then, the paper exemplifies an application on Algorithmic Architecture. FALLINGWATER TOOLBOX VERSION 1.0 is a computational design demo tool for architects to aid in the house schematic design phase according to an analytical study of Frank Lloyd Wright's basic design rules and spatial program of his masterpiece; FallingWater House, (Edgar J. Kaufmann family house 1939). These rules have been transferred to algorithms and code thereafter. At a preceding stage, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) was developed using MAXScript 9.0. Using the FALLINGWATER TOOLBOX, infinite number of house prototypes can be generated within few minutes. Although, the FWT is based on a hypothetical design problem of producing prototype alternatives for a new house with the same identity of the Edgar Kaufmann House, the concept of the tool can be applied on a wider range of problems. It may help generating prototype alternative solutions for residential compounds design according to the required constraints.

summary The paper reports on a pilot study of how a virtual city can be enhanced by interlinking elements of the 3D city model with the city’s collective memory represented in various digital formats. A particular street called Jalan Malioboro in Yogyakarta Indonesia has been modeled and hosted on Google Earth. Through the questionnaires returned by the participating students, we also investigate how collective memory enhanced virtual city (CREATI) could help learners to achieve goals of a particular course. The study shows that CREATI helps students to analyze the task given by providing more historical information related to the street. However it also needs further refinement and evaluation by introducing more interactive features such as enabling students to upload their own design proposals and to post additional information related to the buildings or places.

title Patterns, heuristics for architectural design support: making use of evolutionary modelling in design

summary Software used by architectural and industrial designers has shifted from becoming a tool for drafting, towards use in verification, simulation, project management and remote project sharing. In more advanced models, design parameters for the designed object can be adjusted so that a family of variations can be produced rapidly. With the advances in computer aided design (CAD) technology, design options can now be generated and analyzed in real time. However the use of digital tools to support design as an activity is still at an early stage and has largely been limited in functionality with regard to the design process. To date, major CAD vendors have not developed an integrated tool that is able to leverage specialised design knowledge from various discipline domains (known as expert knowledge systems) as well as to support the creation of design alternatives that satisfy different forms of constraints. We propose that evolutionary computing and machine learning be linked with parametric design techniques in order to monitor a designer’s cognition and intent based on their design history. This will lead to results that impact future work on design support systems which are capable of supporting implicit constraint and problem definition for wicked problems that are difficult to quantify.

summary In this work, we address the challenges in the realization of free-form architecture and complex shapes in general with the technical advantages of ruled surfaces. We propose a geometry processing framework to approximate (rationalize) a given shape by one or multiple strips of ruled surfaces. We discuss techniques to achieve an overall smooth surface and develop a parametric model for the generation of curvature continuous surfaces composed of ruled surface strips. We illustrate the usability of the proposed process at hand of several projects, where the pipeline has been applied to compute NC data for mould production and to rationalize large parts of free-form facades.

summary This paper illustrates responsive systems, which focus on the implementation of multi-objective adaptive design prototypes from sensored environments. The intention of the work is to investigate multi-objective criteria both as a material system and as a processing system by creating prototypes with structural integrity, where the thermal energy flow through the prototype, to be understood as a membrane, can be controlled and the visual transparency altered. The work shows performance based feedback systems and physical prototype models driven by information streaming, screening, and application.

In our research, artistic multimedia interactive installations conceal contemporary concepts and explore computer technology. We believe that this field of research is a powerful resource to develop dialogues between different cultures and promote social and technological inclusiveness.

summary Generative House is a collaborative exploration of advanced technologies for lower - and working - class housing carried out by industrial and academic partners in southern Brazil. It seeks to test generative procedures and digital manufacturing to develop a flexible building system for low - cost sustainable housing in order to inspire future developments in this field by developing an urban grammar through manufacturing models and generative programming, as well as parametric design of panels assembled using digital fabrication. Scale models and full - scale prototype with timber boards have been built, demonstrating the feasibility of the approach proposed. However, further refinement of the adopted procedures and technical applications is required.

summary As technology advances, users get more detached from the way things work and are produced. Users end up being pure consumers and leave their positions as decision makers behind. Before the architecture and buildings processes were industrialized, most practitioners of the so-called vernacular architecture were in fact the dwellers of what they built and they easily met the specific personal needs since they were in total control. Some “architectural theorists have turned to vernacular construction with the conviction that such buildings and settlements express the interconnectedness between humans and the landscapes they live in.” (Beesley and Bonnemaison 2008). Considering the present day intense building activity, such relationship of dweller and architecture seems not possible excepting a very few examples to later referred to. This paper will instead focus on the possibility of the non-architect users of architectures as decision makers in order to reach designs that meet the requirements of their addressees.

summary This paper presents an assessment of a selection software tools for urban design confronting their capabilities with the goals of the CityInduction research project. The goal of this paper is the assessment of existing platforms for computer aided urban design to select one as the basis for implementing the urban design model proposed in the CityInduction project. This model includes three sub-models that support the formulation of design programs from contextual information, the exploration of designs solutions through a grammarbased generative approach, and the validation of designs against the program through the use of evaluation tools. To each of these sub-models corresponds a module in the envisioned platform and so, existing platforms are assessed in terms of their ability to support the implementation of each module. The current goal is a proof-of-concept implementation, but the final goal is the development of a complete platform for supporting urban design.
